A brush fire is contained after backing up traffic for hours Wednesday afternoon and into the night.
The fire started in woods along Interstate 26 westbound about 3:30 on Wednesday. It caused the westbound interstate to shut down for several hours.
It created a seven to eight hour traffic snarl all the way to the Saluda Grade. The fire threatened nearly three dozen homes. Flames came within just 12 feet of some of them, but none of the homes burned.
