One Person Killed In Parking Deck Collapse At Charlotte Mall

»  Comments | Post a Comment

A parking deck collapse at the popular SouthPark Mall in Charlotte has killed one shopper and stranded others for hours.

Police say the driver crashed into the edge of the top level of the parking deck and when a small portion of the three tier deck collapsed her car fell through the opening.  She died at the scene.

Some drivers have not been able to move their cars as officials check the stability of the garage.  A car crushed by thousands of pounds of cement and that driver died shortly after being taken out of the vehicle.

Police say female driver of the car slammed into the wall or support beam causing the top floor of the garage to topple and collapse.  She later died at the scene.  There are no other injuries.

The Charlotte Police Department says cement crushed three other vehicles and at least four to five others are damaged.  For several hours, hundreds of shoppers could not get out their cars out of the garage.  Police officers say it's not safe to move the cars.

Despite the accident, the mall is open.  The city fire department says 90% of the garage is safe and drivers will soon be allowed to pick up their vehicles.

We looked at inspection records of the garage online, but did not find the last time the county inspected.  The county's building inspection department says it remembers someone inspected it, but it can't even find the records
