An Upstate school went on lockdown as authorities investigated a possible connection to the recent shootings in Colorado.
Hampton Park Christian School in Greenville says a former student posted a picture on his “Facebook” profile which was brought to their attention. The picture, which showed an actor pointing a gun at the camera, was posted the same night as the fatal shootings of five people at a mission home and church in Colorado on December 9.
Hampton Park Baptist Church Business Administrator John Yessa says the school received a phone call from Colorado telling them the picture posted by the former student was similar to one posted by the 24-year-old Colorado gunman before he was fatally shot by a security guard.
After receiving the call Wednesday, Hampton Park Christian School went on lockdown Thursday and Friday while the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office investigated. Several parents called News Channel 7 saying they were concerned as to why they weren’t notified until two days later via a letter sent home with students. Yessa says, "We notified parents the second day. In the future we would notify them the same day. We're not used to doing lockdown, so we're learning the process."
Yessa says the student who posted the picture was expelled from Hampton Park Christian for a non-violent offense prior to posting the picture. Although the letter sent home to parents says the individual’s background revealed a potentially unstable situation that could make his or her actions unpredictable, since no direct threats were made toward the school, students or faculty, no charges will be filed.
The picture has since been taken down.
