Twin girls who faced having to switch schools in the middle of the year, due to a District error, will be allowed to stay for the remainder of the year. The Jacksons live on Lyman Lake Road in Lyman in Spartanburg County. One half of the road is in District Five. The other is in District One.
Earlier this month the Jacksons were told 6-year-old Peyton and Presley would have to leave Wellford Elementary in District Five, because they actually live in District One. The Jacksons were told the girls could remain in the district after December, and for the remainder of the school year, only if they paid $3500 tuition. Senator John Hawkins called it "bureaucracy at its worst."
On Monday District Five spokesmen Barry Reese issued this statement: “Acknowledging that District Five erred when telling a family that their residence was within District boundaries when it was actually in Spartanburg School District One, Superintendent, Dr. Scott Turner has decided to allow two Wellford Elementary students to stay at the school. The students will continue to attend Wellford for the remainder of the year, and the family will not be asked to pay tuition. Dr. Turner spoke with Mrs. Dabney Jackson and informed her of the decision. He apologized to the family for any inconvenience and stated that he hopes the students have a very successful year at Wellford.”
The girls’ mother, Dabney Jackson, tells News Channel 7 the family is relieved that the girls will not have to change schools in the middle of the year; but she says the girls will move to Holly Springs-Motlow in District One next year when they start the second grade.
