Updated Story October 27, 2011:
The manufacturer of a recalled toy says it will pay $1.3 Million in civil penalties after government officials say they knowingly sold a toxic and banned substance.
Spin Master, Inc. was the manufacturer of Aqua Dots. They were recalled in 2007 after reports of children and pets getting sick after swallowing the beads. The children’s craft kit and toy had tiny beads that stuck together when sprayed with water. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the Aqua Dots were coated with harmful chemicals that target the kidneys and central nervous system.
CPSC alleges that Spin Master learned the chemical was banned and did not timely report any of the incidents.
In agreeing to the settlement, Spin Master denies CPSC staff allegations that it knowingly violated the law.
Previous Story November 2007:
A company has issued a recall for some popular toys that could cause children to become unconscious.
Spin Master is recalling over 4 million Aqua Dots because the coating on the beads contains a chemical that can be toxic to children if swallowed. Children who swallow the beads can become comatose or have seizures.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission says this has happened to two children in the last several days.
Consumers should immediately take the recalled toy away from children and contact Spin Master to return for free replacement beads or a toy of equal value.
For additional information, contact Spin Master at (800) 622-8339 between 9 am and 6 pm Monday through Friday.
