On Tuesday some seventh grade students in Greenville County set out to break a world record for the longest chain reaction using recycled phone books. The Greer Middle School students developed the design in math class and slipped in some school spirit too. They spelled out GMS in the middle of their design.
The previous “Ripley's Believe It or Not” record was set by some school kids in California. They used almost 500 fewer phonebooks than were used Tuesday at Greer Middle. It took about three minutes and twenty seconds for 1511 used phone books to fall in line.
Student Engineer Emmi Chope says, "l learned definitely what you can use old phone books for." The students took the phone books straight to the recycling bin out back after the event.
Once Ripley officials view the video, the school will receive "official" verification of a world record.
