Christmas came early for kids at two Upstate elementary schools. Spartanburg businessman Andrew Lacey gave a new coat to every child at Arcadia and Lone Oak Elementary Schools. The Spartanburg District Six graduate purchased 600 coats, after students picked their own colors and sizes.
Three-hundred-twenty of the coats were given to Arcadia Elementary, the rest were delivered to Lone Oak Elementary, where every student there received a new coat too. Lacey spent more than $6000 for the coats, most of which were purchased at an area department store.
On Monday, the coats were delivered by Lacey and his family, and with the help of the principal handed out to some very grateful children. Dr. Chuck Bagwell says for some students, the coats were very much needed. "Some kids come in every morning with t-shirts on and don't have a coat,” says Bagwell.
Arcadia kindergarten student Alicia Riddle says she loves her bright yellow jacket. Stylishly sporting the new coat she said, “It’s fur, and it feels so soft, and I love it and I thank all you all."
Approximately 90% of the students at Arcadia are on the assisted lunch program.
