Former Greenville County School District Superintendent Dr. Thomas Kerns has passed away. Dr. Kerns was 76 years old.
Dr. Kerns served as the superintendent from 1989 to 1994 and was first African-American Superintendent of Education of the School District of Greenville County, the largest school district in the state and the 64th largest public school system in the nation.
Kerns attended Sterling High School and graduated in 1949. By 1953 Kerns had earned a degree in French form Johnson C. Smith University. He later earned his Masters degree at Columbia University in New York, and his Doctor of Education degree at the University of South Carolina.
Doctor Kerns spent four decades working for Greenville County's school system.
In May of 2005, the Board of Trustees of the School District of Greenville County named a new elementary school in honor of Dr. Kerns. The Thomas E. Kerns Elementary School was completed in the summer of 2006.
