A rash of recent vicious dog attacks has one upstate council member wanting to ban pit bulls. Just this week, a pair of pit bulls attacked two children and their mother. One of dogs dragged one child across the yard. Then the dogs turned on an Anderson police officer who shot one in self- defense.
For some people, pit bulls are pets. Bobby Hunter, former pit bull owner, says, "They're very necessary for protection around your house." But for other people, pit bulls are killers. City council member Tony Stewart says, "It doesn't matter how much you love them at some point and time they turn causing serious harm to you to your neighbors." So now, he wants the dogs banned from the city.
News Channel 7's Reporter Charmayne Brown asked the council member -- "Are you targeting pit bulls". Stewart answers, "We're targeting malicious dogs and I haven't seen a chihuahua attack people and try to kill them." Just two day ago, 2 pit bulls attacked 2 children and their mother right on Cherry Street in the city. Anderson police had to shoot on of those vicious pits. Stewart doesn't want it happening again, so he's putting it in writing to ban all pit bulls and hybrids of the dogs.
And if you already have a pit bull, they're tightening the guidelines in order for you to keep it.
The ordinance states you must be at least 18 years old to walk the pit bull and the dog must have a muzzle over it's mouth.
That's not all. There's a list.
*The dog must remain in a fenced yard.
*Your pit bull must be licensed with a tag and proof of shots.
*The dog owner must provide the name, address, and number to the seller.
*You must also have at least a $100,000 insurance policy.
Hunter says, "It's like a guard that takes care of your house while you're away at work." And Stewart says that's fine, but that type of guard will have to come with many restraints because it's his top priority to be the guard dog for this community.
That ordinance goes before city council on the 14th for a vote. If it passes, it will go into effect on April 28th.
Any caught violating the ordinance will have to pay -5-hundred dollars and/or spend -30- days in jail.
