These pit bulls are part of a family. "They're wonderful family dogs," say Brandy Hunsucker. "My children sleep with her." She wanted News Channel 7 to meet Sadie and nonnie. They seems to be aggressive because one of the pits kept barking at the news crew, but Hunsucker says They're very playful and gentle.
"They look mean and vicious because she's never seen a camera before. At home they don't act like that," says Hunsucker.
The dogs, she says, are loving and the breed gets a bad rap because of attacks.
"It comes down to people that own these dogs. You have to know how to handle them." She says, of course, like anything else, in the wrong hands the pits can be deadly. Spartanburg Environmental Control Director Don Arnold agrees. "The owner can do things to make the animal more aggressive," he says. But experience and statistics, he says, prove these dogs to be one of the most dangerous.
"When certain traits are bred into, that's always there. It's waiting to erupt at some point or time," says Arnold.
While Hunsucker never worries about her children's safety when it comes to playing with their pets, she does agree with Animal Control. Don Arnold with Animal Control says, there's always the potential for animals to act on instinct.
Hunsucker says, "They happen to fall in the wrong hands. They're powerful and people try to make money off of it."
She says, that's not the purpose, pit bull terriers, like Sadie and Nonnie, are just as loving as any other dogs. She says they should be treated that way.
Director Don Arnold also says, there is a common factor when it comes to dogs that attack. Most of those dogs were chained up in yards or males that had not been neutered.
