CHESTERFIELD, S.C. (AP) - The parents of a South Carolina teen accused of plotting to bomb his high school describe their son as a straight-A student for whom they sought help when he slammed his head into a wall last week.
But County Prosecutor Jay Hodge says Ryan Schallenberger had apparently been planning his potentially deadly scheme for months, and that he had the intellect and and the means and the materials to carry it out.
The 18-year-old Schallenberger was arrested Saturday after his parents called police because the teen had ordered 10 pounds of ammonium nitrate from a Web site. Ammonium nitrate is an explosive commonly used as fertilizer.
Police also said they discovered a hate-filled journal lauding the Columbine killers. There was also an audiotape to be played after Schallenberger perished during his rampage, and a year's worth of plans for the bombing that included a hand-drawn map of the school.
