For a kid who's always savored every second, Katie Doll is now fighting a day to day battle, where every minute is one her family thought might now have. "It's like a ball bouncing out of control," says Katie's aunt, Pam Underwood. "I guess you're never really prepared for this kind of thing."
Nothing could have prepared Doll's family for what happened to the loveable tomboy in late March. The go cart Katie was driving flipped over, and the 10 year old was left with a severe head injury. "I got a call on my son's cell phone," Underwood remembers. "They said Katie had been in an accident and she wasn't moving." The injury to the child's head was so severe, her family thought she would not survive. Nearly four weeks later, she's improving, and showing small signs of the spunk her family loves. "That's Katie. Always pushing the limits."
Surrounded by well wishes from her family and friends at Greenville Memorial Hospital, Katie is slowly fighting back. Just last week, she was taken off the entilator, for the first time since accident. "We have a lot of faith, and things are already changing. Katie's already doing more than they said she'd ever do in her life."
Friends will hold a benefit for Katie Doll on Sunday, May 4. It's at Blind Horse Saloon and starts at 2:00. Tickets are $5.00 and all the proceeds go to help the Doll family.
