LANCASTER, S.C. (AP) - An arson team is investigating a fire which gutted the historic 180-year-old courthouse in Lancaster.
County Council Chairman Rudy Carter says a window in the lower floor of the two-story building was broken when firefighters arrived on the scene about 5:30 a.m. Monday.
No one was hurt.
Carter said the building constructed in 1828 was gutted and he wouldn't guess on a damage estimate.
He says the roof of the courthouse collapsed and a team would have to be brought in to assess the damage to the building listed as a National Historic Landmark.
A witness said the flames were knocked down and the fire was smoldering about 2½ hours after the initial alarm. WSOC-TV in Charlotte, N.C., reported several area fire companies responded.
