Jury selection began this morning in the rape trial of Polk County Sheriff Chris Abril as Superior Court Judge Zoro Guice instructed the potential jurors to fill out a 23-page questionnaire prior to undergoing the seating process.
The 30 people who are candidates for the 12-person jury were finishing up the questionnaires just before court recessed for lunch at noon, attorneys in the case said. Abril, 45, was arrested on Aug. 28, 2006, and charged with five counts of first-degree statutory rape and one count of first-degree sexual offense stemming from alleged incidents in 1988 and 1989 involving a 10-year-old girl and a 12-year-old girl.
Jury selection is expected to resume this afternoon but it could take several days before jury selection is complete, Guice said.
