Preparing children for a new school year typically involves buying new clothes, replacing last year’s backpack, and stocking up on new school supplies.
Often overlooked is a check-up on our children’s feelings and outlook about returning to school.
The P.A.C.E. Center is here to help by offering you some tips on getting your child mentally prepared for a new school year. According to P.A.C.E. Executive Director, Beth Summer-Strait, “Many children experience some anxiety at the beginning of a new school year. Will I get the teachers I want? Will my friends still be in my class? Will I be able to do the work of an advanced grade? Children going to a new school or transitions from elementary to middle, middle to junior high, junior high to high school are especially at risk of a multitude of jumbled emotions.”
There are many things you as parents can do to relieve your child’s back-to-school stress. Studies show that parental involvement can have a tremendously positive impact on how their child responds to school. The best thing parents can do to help their children see a new school year in a positive light is listening to their child.
Parents should talk with their children about the beginning of a new school year. Provide the child with an open, caring environment in which he or she can express their fears or anxieties without judgment or punishment. Knowing that their parents care and are interested in their school lives encourages children to talk about both the positive and negative thoughts and feelings they are experiencing.
Other tips for parents to remember in getting the new school year off to the right start include: Let you child know that you think school is important
Set regular time schedules for doing homework waking up and going to bed
Show interest in your child’s school activities, teachers, and friends
Attend school meetings and events
Celebrate your child’s accomplishments in school
Provide unconditional love and support to your child throughout the school year
