CUMBERLAND ISLAND, Ga. (AP) - The National Park Service is
closing Cumberland Island to visitors as Tropical Storm Fay creeps
toward the Georgia-Florida border.
Cumberland Island administration chief Julie Meeks says two
campers were evacuated Wednesday from Georgia's southernmost
barrier island. A mandatory evacuation also was ordered for all
Park Service employees living on the island.
The Georgia coast is under a tropical storm warning from St.
Marys to Darien. Forecasters say the storm could bring winds
exceeding 40 mph and 3-to-6 inches of rain over the next two days.
Meeks says Cumberland Island should reopen to visitors
Saturday.
Carolinas Likely to Miss Impact from Fay
Storm Team 7 Meteorologist Dan Bickford believes Fay's heavy rain won't make it to the drought-stricken Upstate. Dan says an area of high pressure appears to be strong enough to block Fay’s northward progress, keeping this storm far enough south to greatly limit our chances of rain.
Storm Team 7 reports only fringe moisture around the circulation may affect us Friday and into the weekend. Any change in Fay's track could bump those chances up, or eliminate them altogether.
