A United Airlines jet with 249 passengers and crew on board has made a safe emergency landing in San Francisco.
United Flight 158 was en route from San Francisco to Chicago early today when it developed engine trouble. An airline spokeswoman says one of the engine compressors stalled. The pilot was able to fly the plane back to San Francisco International on one engine, landing about 30 minutes after it took off.
The airline is investigating the source of smoke in the cabin after the plane landed.
Passengers were put up in hotels for the rest of the night and then put on other flights.
