NEW YORK (AP) - Online retailers are hoping they've got a deal for you on "Cyber Monday." But their expectations have also been lowered on what's considered the unofficial kickoff to the online retail season.
Today marks the online retail industry's ceremonial kickoff for the holiday shopping season. The National Retail Federation says more than 80 percent of retailers will have special promotions online today, up from last year.
As for the Thanksgiving weekend sales, they're looking like they only met the low end of expectations, at best.
Industry analyst Marshal Cohen says the message from consumers is they want even better deals and they're willing to wait for them.
It's a busy time for amyadele.com. The online retailer based out of Greer gets a big boost from Cyber Monday.
“We have a sale anyone who visits gets 20% off anything they order without any minimums,” says Amy Wike, co-owner of amyadele.com.
So far so good! Sales for the online children's stationary company are up 80% from Thanksgiving and at mid-day Monday they already met last year's Cyber Monday number.
“We've been encouraged, we’ve been doing really well today,” says Wike.
The deals for Cyber Monday are similar to the ones from Black Friday except for the crowds. Those who want to avoid the mad rush of people just shop at home on their computers. Some shoppers also surf the internet for deals while at work.
