Timothy F. Geithner, 43, became the ninth president and chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York on November 17, 2003. In that capacity, he serves as the vice chairman and a permanent member of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), the group responsible for formulating the nation's monetary policy.

Prior to joining the bank, Mr. Geithner was the director of the Policy Development and Review Department (PDR) of the International Monetary Fund, in Washington, D.C. Mr. Geithner joined the IMF in September 2001 and was appointed director of PDR in December 2001. Mr. Geithner led the department in the IMF responsible for reviewing and approving the Fund's financial programs and its assessments of member economies.

Prior to joining the IMF, Mr. Geithner was a Senior Fellow, International Economics, at the Council on Foreign Relations in Washington, D.C. from February to August 2001. Mr. Geithner served as Under Secretary of the Treasury for International Affairs from 1998 to 2001 under Secretaries Robert Rubin and Lawrence Summers. Prior to his position as Under Secretary, Mr. Geithner served in a number of other positions in the International Affairs division. He joined the Treasury in 1988, and worked in three Administrations for five Secretaries of the Treasury. Mr. Geithner worked for Kissinger Associates, Inc. in Washington, D.C. from 1985 to 1988 before joining the Treasury.

Mr. Geithner graduated from Dartmouth College with a B.A. in government and Asian studies in 1983, and from the Johns Hopkins School for Advanced International Studies with an M.A. in International Economics and East Asian Studies in 1985. He has studied Japanese and Chinese and has lived in East Africa, India, Thailand, China, and Japan.

Mr. Geithner is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, a member of the board of directors of the Center for Global Development in Washington, D.C., and a trustee of the Economic Club of New York.

He is married to Carole Sonnenfeld Geithner, and they have two children, Elise and Benjamin.
