A heated battle over whether or not a massive landfill should be built in Cherokee County -- on hold.
Earlier Monday night, the County Council voted against moving forward with the plan -- for now.
The council voted not to change their current waste management agreement, and are going to let waste management come back with another proposal at a later date. A new discussion will be started.
At issue -- a proposed landfill and recycling center in the McKowns Mountain area.
Supporters say the project will create jobs and revenue for the county.
Opponents worry about waste and property values dropping.
Bob Peeler with Waste Management said of the vote, "We're disappointed in the vote, and we will to fight on We owe it to the citizens in Cherokee County."
Opponents were happy about the temporary victory, but vowed to continue to fight the project.
Hundreds showed up at the meeting to hear the decision.
