The crowd cheered and signs waved at Clemson University Wednesday, as the only presidential candidate born in South Carolina, came home. John Edwards was born in Seneca, and is the son of mill workers, which is something he makes sure supporters, don't forget.
"I was born here, I know what your lives are like, I don not have to read this in a book," Edwards said.
So after his rally, we grabbed the former U.S. Senator for an exclusive one-on-one, asking your questions in a Campaign '08, Voice of the Voter.
Edwards agreed with Spartanburg viewer Diedra Norman, who emailed News Channel 7 asking, "why aren't the rich taxed more?"
"The questioner is dead right," said Edwards. "What's happening is the middle class and low income workers are carrying the tax burden in this country. That will change when I am President. We're going to give tax cuts to the middle class to save, to be able to send their kids to college, to be able to pay for child care and we're going to reverse the tax breaks that the richest Americans have gotten, the millionaires have gotten."
And money is the top issue for viewer Billy Step who wrote, "When is someone going to do something about social security? If my memory serves me right, years ago feds started borrowing from out social securIty and said they would pay it back. Well that's been over thirty years ago and none has been paid back, now they say its going broke."
Edwards said, "Well, what I'm not for for Social Security is cutting benefits, privatization, for raising the retirement age. What I am for, is doing something about the cap on people who pay taxes because what happens is multi-millionaires, most of their income is protected from paying social security taxes. That has to be changed."
Edwards said he expects to win the South Carolina primary, just like he did in his first bid for the White House back in 2004, but will continue in the race, no matter the outcome.
