A mother and her young son died following a fire at a Spartanburg County apartment complex late Tuesday night.

The Spartanburg County Coroner's Office tells us Tessa Naomi Kennedy and her 3-year-old son Nicholas Cardell Kennedy were pronounced dead at about 10:30pm at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Whitney firefighters were called to the blaze at Wildwood Apartments on Bryant Road at 9:45pm. The flames were confined to one apartment. The Whitney Fire Department says the fire started in the kitchen area, likely on the stove when someone left something cooking.

The first responders said they had to force their way into the locked apartment. They pulled the child out and administered CPR unsuccessfully on the front lawn.

Firefighters say his mother died on the way to SRMC.

The apartment above suffered some minor smoke damage, but the firefighters at the scene first were able to get the fire out quickly. This is the second deadly fire at those apartments this year. Crews say their familiarity with the complex from the earlier fire helped keep the flames and smoke contained.

Brandi Michelle Massey, 22, was visiting a friend at the complex and died in that fire. The blaze left 16 other people homeless in March. Investigators told us that fire was started by an unattended stove.

Fire crews were on scene until about 1:30am Wednesday.
