A man is dead after a house fire that a fire chief says was started because of a lit cigarette in bed.

The Spartanburg County Coroner's Office says Kenneth Lynn Knight, 51, died at 12:40am Thursday at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

He was taken there after Duncan firefighters were called to the scene at 106 Chapel Road. Duncan Fire Chief Barry Frost says the victim was smoking in bed and a cigarette started the fire.

Knight’s mother and sister saw the flames when they were reported around 10:00pm Wednesday. They ran out of the house to safety.

The Coroner's Office says that after an autopsy Knight died from thermal burns and carbon monoxide poisoning.

We're told the fire damage was limited to inside the home.
