With a name like "Besto", it's not hard to believe Sharon Christmas's Anderson restaurant brings out the best in her community. "We've been here for 27 years, my sister and I," she says. Even the sticker on the door, which reads "Jesus is the answer", shows Christmas has a heart. "We've fed people before, helped churches before." But a phone call last week changed the longtime owner's mind. The story on the other end was better than anything that's been cooked up in her kitchen before. "A guy called, said he was from Central Presbyterian. He said he was fixing to start a funeral, and he had a family that had been burned out the night before, and asked if we could feed them. He said he would come by after the funeral and pay us." A few burgers and some fries later, Christmas had done another good deed. When the family came for their meal, they even signed this receipt saying someone from the local church would come by to pay for their food. Only problem: no one ever showed up. "We knew then it was a scam," says Christmas.
The scam has hit at least one other local restaurant, according to Anderson Police. Applebee's on Clemson Boulevard had a similar thing happen. The bill at Besto was only $40, but Christmas says it's not about the money, but more a lack of faith in a generous neighbor. "I always said God doesn't like ugly."
