At About 6 a.m. Tuesday, Clemson University firefighters responded to a fire at the Center of Faith Community Church at 118 Gantt St, according to reports from News Channel 7 coverage partner the Anderson Independent-Mail.
Capt. William Shivar said firefighters arrived to find fire coming from the roof at the rear of the almost 2,000 square foot building. He said firefighters controlled the fire in about 30 minutes.
“The entire attic and roof were completely consumed over the sanctuary, he said.
So far, a cause of the fire has not been determined, but “we have seen nothing suspicious,” Shivar said.
Nothing was saved from the church office or sanctuary, he said.
The church's basement, which contains a kitchen and fellowship hall, suffered extensive damage from smoke and water, he said.
Witness Ed Clark said he arrived to see a church fully engulfed in flames.
“I saw fire coming out the front and the back,” he said. “The top was already gone. It went up in a hurry.”
News Channel 7 spoke to several church members. They told us they were sad about the loss but thankful that no one was hurt. Church members don't know where services will be held on Wednesday or Sunday now that the church, built in the 1940s, is gone.
