Jury selection is underway in the Spartanburg murder trial of Howard Sims, according to the District 7 solicitor's office. The defendant was charged with the June 1, 2007 murder of John Lammers.
Spartanburg Public Safety found the victim inside his Carlton Drive home. Lammers died as a result of multiple stab wounds. The suspect, Howard Sims, was out on bond at the time of the murder. Prosecutors believe he broke into the victim's home and stole items two previous times before breaking in a third time and encountering the victim, John Lammers. In fact, they believe he stabbed him to death with a knife stolen during one of the previous break-ins.
Principal Deputy Solicitor Barry Barrnette is partnering with Assistant Solicitor Zach Ellis to prosecute the case. Circuit Judge Derham Cole is presiding over the trial.
Testimony on the case will cease mid-day as local criminal justice leaders attend the funeral of a Clinton-area circuit judge who recently passed.
