The Pickens County Council is discussing an ordinance that would cut businesses that hire or work with illegal immigrants from county contracts and jobs, said Council member Ben Trotter who sponsored the ordinance.

Trotter told News Channel 7 that if people are in the country illegally, they should not be payed with tax payer money. He says this is not against any race or legal immigrants and welcomes everyone to our country, but just thinks they should enter the United States legally.

We spoke to a vendor who did not what to be identified but said this is going to be a problem with many vendors.

He says, if potential workers present paperwork, it's difficult for business owners to know if that paperwork is forged or not legit.

Trotter says that's why they're asking the businesses to use the E-verify system, a free website which checks Social Security numbers against names and addresses.

We did speak to a man who retired from the construction business who told us many of the illegals are the only people who are applying for the jobs, and they are hard workers.

Trotter said that if illegal immigrants were not hired, businesses would be forced to raise their pay rates, and people in the country legally would apply for jobs with a fair wage to pay taxes and feed their families.
