Consignment stores like Plato’s Consignment in Greenville will buy back clothing no more than two years old. The average customer earns about $50. Rising ninth grader Carly Wilson shops consignment where she can get more for her money. That makes her mom, Jennifer Wilson happy. "A lot of it was name brand quality, so it's good stuff,” says her mom. Lee Fenske of Plato's Closet says denim is the most popular back to school seller. They are something the store is both selling and buying. "The Express jeans... we would sell them for $20 and you would get $8… We have all the high end brands for 70 percent less of the price" They also have designer items. We found designer jeans for $55, Coach shoes for $55, and a Coach purse for $45.
If your children will be sporting uniforms this year, Mom Denise Lillie says she got a good deal at Goodwill. “I got them some little khaki pants and button down shirt, plain white… It was like a$1.25, or $2.25. It was real cheap, so, I went there and got them a couple of pair."
Plato’s Closet has uniform style items too. A Polo shirt will pocket you $4 - $6, or you can pick one up for $12 - $14. Khaki pants pay $3 - $7, or you can buy them from $8 - $16.
"More selling, more buying. Everyone wants the cheaper things for a great price, " says Fenske. It’s a deal that seems to be working for places like Plato and their customers.
Carly says, "It's discounted, and I like the stuff here." While there are consignment stores all over the Upstate, Plato’s Closet in Greenville says they buy all seasons of clothes all year long.
