Easley will have to wear a sling for awhile and restrict activity for several months.
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Gov. Mike Easley's doctor ribbed the chief executive in advance of his shoulder surgery.
Easley scheduled surgery Tuesday at Duke Hospital to fix torn tendons and remove bone spurs from his right shoulder. Easley will have to wear a sling for awhile and restrict activity for several months.
Dr. Bill Garrett said Easley should stay away from NASCAR driving - he once had an accident while driving at Lowe's Motor Speedway.
Garrett also said Easley might want to abstain from "Obama fist bumps." Easley got some laughs after he bumped knuckles with Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama in Raleigh last month.
The sling may make it difficult for Easley to sign bills into law with his writing hand, but Garrett said Easley's "signature will not be any worse."
Easley signs penalty bill for sex offenders
Sex offenders who commit certain crimes against children will face at least 25 years in prison under a new North Carolina law.
Gov. Mike Easley on Monday signed into law a measure which raises the penalties for adult offenders who commit certain sex crimes against children - including rape. The new law requires judges to sentence child sex offenders to a minimum 25 years in prison. Offenders who are released will be monitored by satellite for life.
The measure, which is known as Jessica's Law, is named after former Gaston County resident Jessica Lunsford. In 2005, the 9-year-old was kidnapped, raped and buried alive by a convicted sex offender in Florida.
Jessica's father, Mark Lunsford, attended the bill signing ceremony which was held in the county seat of Gastonia.
