Brenda says she and her blind friend, Barbara, were sitting on the gazebo Monday at Cleveland park in Spartanburg.
The gazebo sits in the middle of a pond. Barbara's Australian Heeler guide dog, Skipper, who she has had for 11 years, saw some ducks and jumped into the pond. But then he couldn't get out because the side of the gazebo is cement going into the water at a straight angle.
Brenda ran over to the actual edge of the pond and called him, trying to get him to swim over to the bank where he could easily climb out. But of course Skipper is trained to never leave his master's side, so he continued trying to climb straight up the gazebo wall.
Brenda then came back to gazebo and tried to lift him out, but he was too heavy for her. This went on for about 10 minutes and then Skipper started going under.
Just in the nick of time, a man named Cecil Norris who was walking on the walking trail saw what was going on and ran over and lifted Skipper out of the water. He is doing fine now after his close call.
