Barack Obama has clinched the Democratic nomination for President. Many superdelgates made up their minds tonight, or swapped sides, helping Obama go over the top. Meanwhile, sources close to the Clinton campaign told the AP that Hillary Clinton would be interested in a vice presidential position. She spoke to supporters in New York tonight and refused to make any annoucement on her future, but she did say she would consult with supporters and party officials to determine her next move. Clinton won the South Dakota Primary Tuesday evening.
The nomination marks a very historic moment in US policital history. Obama becomes the first African-American nominee from a major political party. The nomination was pretty much a done deal before the South Dakota and Montana primaries were even completed.
Meanwhile in Louisiana, Republican nominee John McCain declared the general election to have begun, and said he looked forward to challenging Obama.
