Several newly opened seats in Spartanburg County make Tuesday's Republican Primary interesting. Senator John Hawkins retires from the legislative scene, opening up his District 12 Senate seat. Current House member Scott Talley, Lee Bright, and LB Watson are vying for the nomination. With Talley running for Hawkins' seat, that opens up his District 34 House seat. Longtime Spartanburg businessman Mike Forrester and local business owner Ken Roach are running for the nomination. Finally, former Speaker Pro Tempore Doug Smith steps out of the political spotlight, and Derham Cole, Jr and Christina Jeffery battle it out for the GOP nomination in House District 32. The winner will face Democratic challenger Will Rothschild in November.
In the Senate 12 seat, Scott Talley has been a House member since 2000. He is a partner of the law firm Pye and Talley. Lee Bright was a school board member in Spartanburg County. Bright owns and operates On Time Transportation, a national trucking and hauling service. LB Watson is a code enforcement officer with the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office as well as the owner of LB Watson Grading.
In the House 34 race, Mike Forrester is a Spartanburg native and currently is the Director of Economic Development for Spartanburg Community College. Ken Roach is also from Spartanburg and owns the Ken Roach Insurance Agency.
Derham Cole, Jr, is running for the Republican nomination for House District 32. He is a business law attorney for the Parker Poe firm. Christina Jeffery recently worked for the Palladian Group, served as campaign manager for Dr. Henry Jordan's 2006 run for Lt.
