Governor Mark Sanford was in the Upstate on Monday backing residents in opposition of a proposed landfill.
The proposal is for a new landfill in Laurens county. The company wants to build a construction and demolition landfill near Interstate 385 on one side of Lake Martin.
Crowds of homeowners gathered at the site to listen to the governor voice their concerns. The governor advised residents to sign petitions and send them to the Department of Health and Environmental Control to stop the permitting process of this development.
The Governor stated one of the problems that worried him is the former DHEC director of solid waste is now working for the company wanting to build the landfill.
Governor Sanford feels this gives MRR Solutions an unfair advantage,
