Three witnesses took the stand in the sixth day of the Bobby Medford trial Monday. The main witness before and after lunch was Jerry Pennington, who worked for Henderson Amusement Inc. in Grover, North Carolina. Pennington has been charged with bribery, gambling and conspiracy. Pennington testified there was a system of code symbols used on expense reports to stand for money he paid the former sheriff and other officers. Pennington also testified he paid the former sheriff $100.00 a month for each machine. Pennington has been sentenced to 63 months in prison. Former Buncombe County Sheriff Bobby Medford has pleaded not guilty to ten counts of conspiracy and obstruction in what prosecutors are calling an illegal gambling operation.
