Primary day is here for North Carolina. The state hosts an all-important Democratic presidential primary, where Barack Obama has a slight lead over Hillary Clinton. Senate, Congresssional and statewide office primaries are all on the line. In western North Carolina, some county commissioner and judgeship races are also up for grabs. But it's the presdential race that has helped push record numbers of new voters to the polls. According to the State Board of Elections, over 250,000 new voters registered this year, a new state record. Experts predict the largest statewide turnout since 1982, approaching or exceeding 50 percent.
Polls open at 6:30am and close at 7:30pm. Barack Obama will be in Raleigh tomorrow night watching the state results. Tuesday is also the day of another important presidential primary, Indiana, where Hillary Clinton is currently ahead. News Channel 7 will have complete coverage of the day's events, including all of the results and expert analysis, beginning at noon.
