COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina farmers say the state's plans to clamp down on illegal immigration will only cause confusion and hurt the economy, while not solving the problem. The House will debate this week legislation that to severely punish employers who knowingly hire illegal workers. The Senate passed the bill last week, which broke a stalemate between the two chambers on how to check workers' legal status. Farmers say only Congress can solve the issue. They worry they won't be able to continue farming because Americans don't want the backbreaking jobs.
The House will not get to the bill Tuesday, but it is expected to come up before the end of the week.
