The House approved legislation Tuesday that would suspend business licenses of South Carolina employers who knowingly hire illegal workers. The house removed one of three options the Senate gave employers as a way to verify workers' legal status. The latest measure limits verification to a federal online database called E-Verify or a South Carolina driver's license. It deleted employers' ability to use a new paper-based system created and audited by the state. Now the measure returns to the Senate, which must decide whether to accept the changes. Governor Mark Sanford has released a statement, saying he approves of this revised version of the bill and he hopes to sign the bill when it reaches his desk.
