Daniel Bailey, 18, had a bond revocation hearing Thursday. He's charged with wreckless homicide in the death of retired Spartanburg County deputy Steve Spears. Investigators say Spears was on his riding lawnmower, when Bailey ran off the road and hit him, killing him. Bailey's mother told the judge Thursday that her son has blackouts and epileptic seizures. Prosecutors told the judge Bailey never mentioned blackouts or seizures on the night of the accident, when he spoke to troopers. Prosecutors say Bailey was driving his SUV at more than 70mph in a 35mph zone on Highway 150, passing cars on double-yellow lines, when he lost control, ran off the road, and ran over Spears.
Spears widow, Mary Ann Spears, gave us this statement: "It could not have been a blackout. That wouldn't account for him driving so fast and passing other cars. He took the life of a precious man. But I'm not mad at him. If it had been me on that lawnmower, Steve would have forgiven (Bailey) and asked him if he knows the Lord, and so that's what I'm going to do."
