Young kids on social networking sites, including teens in the Upstate, are not always safe.
The arrest and arraignment today, of a 21 year old Alabama man for having sex with a 14 year old Greenville County girl he met on Myspace, highlights the issue many parents are concerned about.
But some action is being taken. NewsChannel 7 has learned, the world's second largest networking site, Facebook, has taken major steps to ensure predators and bullies don't have easy access to kids.
40 new safeguards have been put in place, such as:
-Remove those who post comments or pictures suggesting underage sex or bullying
-Patrolling profiles for adult users masquerading as children
-Sending warnings to children when they are in danger of giving personal information to an adult
Lawmakers from North Carolina were instrumental is pressuring the site to take action.
Experts say older people often lie about their age to try to hook up with kids online.
Facebook has decided the more roadblocks, the better.
70 million people are on Facebook; the majority of them underage.
