SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Broadway and television star, producer, dancer and choreographer Debbie Allen will hold a Free Dance Day on Saturday, May 10, in the Benjamin Johnson Arena at Wofford College. The Free Dance Day is sponsored by the Brainerd Institute in collaboration with Wofford College and the Spartanburg Little Theatre.
Free Dance Day will begin with registration at 8 a.m. and classes will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Classes will include tap, hip-hop, jazz and ballet. Featured guests include Alla Khaniashvilli from the Bolshoi Ballet, Jason Samuel-Smith (tap) and Kevin Harris (hip-hop). There is no cost to attend the Free Dance Day, however donations will be accepted for the Brainerd Institute in Chester, S.C.
The event is being held in conjunction with the presentation of Allen's "Brothers of the Knight" at the Chapman Cultural Center. A presentation of the Spartanburg Little Theatre and Youth Theatre, "Brothers of the Knight" is an incredibly hip adaptation of the classic fairytale "The Twelve Dancing Princesses." Though the young Knight brothers are forbidden to dance by their strict preacher father, they continue to sneak out night after night. The only clues to where they go are the torn-up shoes by their beds the next morning. When the housekeeper catches on to their secret, will she turn them in?
This is a wonderful opportunity to see Allen work her magic with an energetic young cast of local and professional talent.
