Republican presidential candidate John McCain is hoping South Carolinians will help him seal the deal on his road to the White House.
McCain was in the Palmetto State Friday at a fundraiser luncheon and press conference. The event held a $2300 price tag. McCain said events like this show the Republican Party united and energized.
McCain discussed his views on rising conflicts in Lebanon. Its capital, Beirut, has been experiencing some of the worst street fighting and sectarian clashes since Lebanon's 15-year civil war.
"It's a very serious situation," said McCain "Lebanon's people deserve the same opportunities for freedom and democracy that all nations deserve."
The presidential candidate said he's ready to help Americans with issues and challenges they're facing. He talked about his plans to help improve the housing market and ways to combat rising gas prices.
However, he talked little about Governor Mark Sanford as a possible vice presidential running mate. McCain says the South Carolina governor is important and someone he admires and respects, but would not discuss any steps he's planning to take in the process.
Governor Sanford was not at the event, but other top state Republican leaders were.
South Carolina House Speaker Bobby Harrell and Attorney General Henry McMaster showed their support at the event and were thanked for their leadership.
McCain said his party is ready to face whomever the Democratic Party chooses as its nominee. He also said he looks forward to carrying out the legacy of Ronald Reagan.
"It's time Americans get the break they deserve," said McCain.
McCain said he has a long-time and special relationship with South Carolina. He plans to return during the general election.
