As the cost of gas and food rises more and more people are looking to save money, especially with vacation season rapidly approaching.
News Channel 7’s Heather Sullivan took a look at seven ways people could save money as they enjoyed their vacations. Here is what she found out.
Number Seven: Shorten your trip and stay midweek rather than weekend. Flights and hotels are cheaper during the week.
Number Six: Look at destinations that are nearby and save the big trip for another year.
Number Five: Consider off-season vacation spots. For example, ski resorts still need to fill rooms in the summer and they are a lot cheaper.
Number Four: Search for the lowest airfares on websites like Travelocity, Expedia and Orbitz. Then check the airline’s website and you might save $10 or @20 dollars if you buy direct. Sites like Airfarewatchdog and Travelzoo will also alert you when there’s a deal.
Number Three: Before you book your hotel online, call the hotel and ask if there are any deals or cheaper dates. High gas prices may mean there’s more vacancy at your destination and therefore, cheaper rates.
Number Two: Choose hotels and restaurants that accept discount cards, like Triple-A or AARP. Check your credit cards and air miles for points you can use.
Number One: There are several website like Homeexchange, digsville and Craigslist, where you can volunteer to swap your home for a home where you want to travel. Saving the cost of a hotel with the upstate’s close proximity to mountains, lakes and historic cities, we found upstate homes being offered for swaps in France and a Charleston family looking to come to Greenville.
So, keep these options in mind as you look for your vacation this year. They could help save you some money.
