Both the South Carolina Senate and House have passed a bill which would prevent students from spending a long period of time in jail after being arrested for a misdemeanor at school.
What’s been called the "school resource bill", would still allow SROs to arrest students, but a bond hearing would be required within -24- hours of arrest.
The legislation, introduced by rep. Fletcher smith of Greenville, was sparked after two -13- year old Greenville county schools spent -4- days in jail after they were arrested for fighting at school earlier this month.
The bill now must be ratified before it’s sent to the governor.
