There have been problems with voters who registered at the DMV in South Carolina. Polling places are telling them they are not registered. The DMV says when someone comes into the DMV to do something else and registers to vote, they have to fill out a form asking if they want to register to vote. If they mark yes, it gets put into the system, prints out a form and that's what's given to the county voter registration office. Also, send electronically to the State Election Commission.
DMV has staff on hand until the polls close to verify information. County voter registration is supposed to contact State Election Commission, which contacts the DMV, which checks the person's name. The DMV sends the info to State Election Commission and they determine if the person is eligible to vote.
So if someone registered at the DMV and gets to the poll and is told they’re not registered, they should contact their county voter registration office first. If that doesn’t help, they should contact the DMV and the DMV can send their information to the polling place showing that they are registered. The number for the DMV in Columbia is (803) 896-5000.
