News Channel 7 Capitol Reporter Robert Kittle spoke with Congressman Jim Clyburn Wednesday morning about what President-Elect Barack Obama will be facing. He told Robert Obama will be facing some monumental problems, which is why he was less emotional last night about Obama winning the presidency than he was after Obama won the nomination.
Robert asked him how long voters should give him to see some progress, since Obama mentioned in his speech last night that it might take a year, or a term, to see some results. Clyburn says we shouldn’t give Obama anything more than the usual first 100 days to see that he’s taking steps to address the problems, BUT, since these problems took longer than 100 days to create, it’ll take more than that to solve them.
Congressman Clyburn also said he’s already working on, and will sponsor, a bill to set up early voting nationwide. That would apply only to federal elections, and he said if states wanted to have a dual system to keep what they have in place now that would be their right. But he definitely wants to see early voting, and thinks there’s no reason we should hang on to the outdated system we have.
