Four of of five 10th graders in South Carolina passes both sections of the state's exit exam according to numbers released Friday by the state Department of Education.
The average passing rate of nearly 81 percent was the best performance yet on the exam. The score was 3.7 percentage points higher over 2007.
Public school students must pass both the English Language Arts and mathematics sections of the High School Assessment Program to meet the exit exam requirement for a diploma.
About half of the states require high school students to pass an exit exam to earn a diploma. South Carolina also requires students to earn 24 high school credits to graduate.
The Department of Education says some states require as few as 14.
