Obama's Aunt To Fight Deportion

»  Comments | Post a Comment

BOSTON (AP) - Barack Obama's aunt isn't going home without a fight.

A few days before the election, it was learned that the aunt had been living in Boston for five years -- even though she'd been ordered by an immigration judge in 2004 to leave the country. The
judge had rejected her request for asylum from her native Kenya.

Her immigration lawyer today said Zeituni Onyango (pronounced: zay-TUHN on-YANG-oh) plans to fight the deportation order, and that she hopes to remain in the U.S.

The Associated Press has learned that she's staying with relatives in Cleveland after fleeing her public housing apartment in Boston.

Onyango is Obama's father's half-sister.

Obama's campaign had said last week that he didn't know about his aunt's status, but that he believes she should obey the law.

A Cleveland attorney says she's exploring legal options, and that she may file a motion to reopen the case, or file an appeal for her to stay on humanitarian grounds.
