A store owner got robbed for the second time, but this time he fought back. Deputies say the robber who held the man at gunpoint is still on the loose.
It's a 7 On Your Side Crime Tracker Alert. Anderson County deputies say this happened at the Sunoco store near the intersection of Highway 76 and Milliwee Creek Road in the Sandy Springs Community.
Al Befekadu owns that business and says a man walked in and put a gun in his face demanding all of his money. Befekadu told him he'd get it but then pulled out his own gun and shot into the air, scaring the robber off.
Befekadu said he beefed up store security after the store was robbed in July.
Among the safety measures Befekadu initiated, he:
- installed surveillance cameras
- installed more lighting out side
- hired a security guard to patrol the area every 15 min.
- got a gun
After last night's robbery, however, some of his measures didn't help. He later learned the surveillance recording equipment was out of memory. Also, the attempted robbery happened before his security guard got on duty.
He now knows what to do to keep the recording equipment from running out of memory and has extended the guard's hours.
He said he wants would-be robbers to know they may get more than they expected in the stores.
"They need to get their own money, not rob people. I work 18 hours a day, to raise my own family, so I don't have to be a burden to anybody," Befekadu . "Then these people come in and they rob. This has got to stop. This is terrorism right here at home."
The Sheriff's Office did arrest a group of people for the July robbery. We're told they were connected to that string of robberies we told you about back in the summer across Anderson County.
