South Carolina Govenor Mark Sanford was voted Friday as the chairman of the Republican Governors Association.
“I am honored and excited to become chairman of the Republican Governors Association as we work together to win a majority of Governors by 2010,” said RGA Governor Sanford in a written release. “Republican Governors are natural leaders who will find solutions to our nation’s challenges and bring back the Party.”
Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour became the new Vice-Chairman.
The RGA has been meeting in Miami where the appearance of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, just over a week removed from being on the GOP presidential ticket with Senator John McCain, has attracted a reported 200 reporters to the gathering.
Sanford told CNN in an interview at the meeting that the stinging defeat in the general election has been building over the last few years.
"I would throw everybody into the mix," said Sanford to CNN. "In many ways what happened began well outside of the presidential campaign because you saw election losses back in the 2006 campaign going forward. So, this is something that's, you know, the Republican Party has been doing to itself over the last couple of years and obviously part of the topic of today, tomorrow, yesterday here in Miami."
The Republican Governors Association says it was the only GOP campaign committee to have all its incumbents reelected.
