Clemson University employees who face financial hardship from the mandatory five-day furlough can get some relief from a fund set up by the university to help them.

President James Barker announced Monday that he will make the first contribution to the new One Clemson Furlough Relief Fund.

“We have some employees who we know were struggling in this economy before the furlough was even announced,” Barker said. “Many faculty, staff, administrators and trustees asked me how they can help, and this was one way that was suggested by a large number of people.”

Contributions to the fund will be accepted beginning today. Detailed information on how to apply for aid from the fund will be sent to employees later this week.

Any permanent, full-time employee who feels the need may apply, Barker said, but priority will be given to those applicants at the lowest end of the pay scale. The amount of money to be distributed will depend on the amount contributed.

Clemson people are generous,” he said. “While we may not be able to make up the complete deficit, I know that we can help.”

Directing disbursements from the fund will be a team of fund managers composed of three Clemson retirees: Cecil Huey, professor emeritus of mechanical engineering; Holley Ulbrich, professor emeritus of economics; and Dick Simmons, retired director of human resources.

The Clemson University Foundation is accepting gifts designated for the One Clemson Furlough Relief Fund. Checks should be sent to Clemson University Foundation, PO Box 1889, Clemson, SC 29633. Contributions will be accepted through Dec. 31, 2008, and funds will be distributed as soon as possible to employees in greatest need.
